Yoga, Trees and Giving Back!

Hi there, Emma of Emma’s Yoga Hut here!

Some of you might know that yoga comes with a raft of very beautiful philosophies called the Yamas and Niyamas, they are a kind of yogic guide for living well. There are huge amounts that can be said about these, and at some point I will write about some of them, but right now my post isn’t specifically about them. It is about yoga, trees, giving back and being in service to others and the planet we live on.

I have a 10 year old daughter. She is mad on all things animal and nature and Greta Thunberg is her absolute heroine, she worries about the planet and cannot understand why more isn’t being done, which I get, because she is growing up in some crazy times. Well, in the first week back at school she, voluntarily, spent three nights planning, drafting and writing a letter to her Headteacher arguing for part of the school field to be planted with trees to help with CO2 levels in the atmosphere, encourage wildlife in (I’m pretty sure no self respecting wildlife would hang out in a primary school playground, at least in school hours, but I haven’t the heart to tell her that!) and, on a practical level the trees will help provide some shade on the insanely hot days we now have. She also spent ages planning her campaign to run for school council on the same reforestation ticket, I am ridiculously proud of her, obviously!

These two things – yoga philosophy and my daughters enthusiasm for looking after the planet - might seem to be unrelated random ramblings, but they are not! Yoga is very big on the importance of giving back to our communities and the planet, and my daughter is passionate about rewilding and undoing our negative environmental impact. These two combined inspired me to choose to be giving back to the planet we live on through tree planting; we are part of this beautiful earth just like every animal, flower and tree. So, for every course or workshop which is filled at Emma's Yoga Hut I am arranging for a sapling to be planted through the National Trust, as part of their project to plant 2 million trees. They have dedicated land to do this with, the trees will be maintained, cared for and protected by the National Trust. That way we can help absorb CO2, increase biodiversity, support a charity who protects green spaces, and help keep the countryside beautiful too! Click on this link for more details of this awesome National Trust project. Plant a tree to help nature thrive or as a gift l UK | National Trust

For this block of courses in September I am planting 3 saplings. I am hoping to make it even more next block of courses and workshops which start in November!

With Love,

Emma x

(Emma runs Emma’s Yoga Hut in Earley. A tiny garden studio for small group yoga tuition. She is a yoga student and yoga teacher and has practiced yoga for 25 years. She trained with the Traditional Yoga Association right here in Reading between 2016 and 2018 to achieve her 500 hour yoga teaching accreditation. She has additional teaching qualifications in Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra which she subsequently undertook online during the great lockdown of 2020. Emma tries her best to practice yoga every day, and to be as green as possible under the watchful eye of her very own mini eco-activist!)
